Motorhead's fourth LP (fifth, if you count the belatedly released On Parole) provided the just rewards of five years spent on the road across the UK. Produced by Vic Maile, and recorded in Rickmansworth at the tail end of 1980, it reached No. 4 in the UK charts. The title track, originally released in October that year as a taster from the new LP, reached No.15, spending 12 weeks on the chart in the process. Ace Of Spades is now rightly regarded as a heavy metal classic, having been issued a number of times over three decades as well as used in computer games, film soundtracks and even to sell Pot Noodles! The song somewhat over shadows what is one of the band's finest albums from the earlier part of their career. With the line-up of "Fast" Eddie Clarke, Philthy "Animal" Taylor, and that living legend Lemmy Kilmister, the album features such Motorhead perennials as ‘Jailbait’, ‘The Chase Is Better Than The Catch’, and that anthem dedicated to their fellow road dogs, ‘(We Are) The Road Crew’. Despite the spaghetti western image of the band on the cover, the photo was apparently taken in a sandpit in Barnet rather than Mexico.
